On my Ford Ranger 2000 XLT RWD (4x2), may I replace the 4R55E transmission for a 5R44E without of computer or other parts replacement?

I am not an expert on the specifics of thr Ford 4R55E, and the 5R44E, but If you are foing from a computer controled transmission to a non computer model, or the oppisite, there is information the transmission needs to know to be able it to make good decisions on when and how to shift. I know in the GM transmission swaps, there are companies that sell kits that will allow installing computer controled transmissions into vehicles without computers. Try searching the web for transmission conversions-Ford and see how you do. Good luck.

Both transmissions are computer controlled and it is unlikely that the controls as they are currently can control the new transmission. There would eb a better chance if the 5R44E transmission was ever installed at the factory in this particular model of Ranger. If I'm not mistaken the 4R55E is a 4 speed automatic and the 5R44E is a 5 speed. It's highly unlikely that they are compatible electronically.
