Guidance on Selecting Laser Cutting Machines

09/21/2010 12:14 PM

Greetings. I am seeking guidance on selecting laser cutting machine. I wish to know about machines capable for cutting 4x8 sheets of 16 gauge sheet metal. I am not familiar with CNC machines and for my purpose I would prefer something that can make duplicates of patterns. These duplicates could range from a few copies to hundreds or more of each pattern. Please offer some guidance, and thank you generously for your help.

We use Trumpf laser cutting machines for many years.

And we are completely satisfied with productivity, reliability and service.

I have been looking for info on smaller laser cutters that can cut fine detail in thin plastic (.030") thick or Kapton film & FR4 and also possibly for marking. I have found some marking engraving lasers but nothing that really seems to be well suited for cutting thin non-metal sheets. When I say fine detail, an example would be cutting a .010" diameter hole.

Anyone have any ideas for this type of laser equipment that wont cost $250K?

EFIM,

Thanks for the above link, they may have what I need, hopefully not too expensive.

Thanks,

Brian

The Mitsubishi machines in our shop have proven to be some truely reliable workhorses. Two of them, 4kW, with a loader/unloader that really do put out 24 hours a day for many years now. Preventative maintenance is the key.

I looked into the Epilog laser engravers/markers but when I asked them about cutting thin plastics they never responded. I thought that maybe I asked a dumb question but I'm glad to hear that some engravers can be used for cutting through plastic film/sheet.

Thanks
