Quantum Computing - Fact or Fiction?

03/10/2007 2:28 PM

The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration confirmed Thursday that it built a special chip used in a disputed demonstration of quantum computing in February.

NASA engineers used their experience with sub-micrometer dimensions and ultra-low temperatures to build a quantum processor for Canadian startup D-Wave Systems Inc., said Alan Kleinsasser, principal investigator in the quantum chip program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

D-Wave claimed to demonstrate a prototype quantum computer during a news conference Feb. 13 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. But industry experts became skeptical when D-Wave revealed it had left the computer at its Vancouver office, then conducted the demonstration over a Web link.

Isn't there a limit to the physical dimension of gas-etched components? I understand it's the wavelength of the "carving" ray in this x-ray lithography, and the ability to focus and re-direct it.

What are the real dimensions involved, and how are they going to protect the signal-integrity from stray quantum "ghosts"?

So far as I can find out all things quantum are rather uncertain. Great leaps forward are always just around the next corner. It is an industry founded on mystery cloaked in more mystery, and bound up by further mysterey.

That's what they want everybody to think, so they can further push for it to become a substitute religion. "Quantum" has become synonymous to "magic" in many popular new-age books a-la "Zen and the whatchamacallit", aimed specifically at people who have no idea of what "Quantum Mechanics" are, so that they (the authors) can go forward and push-on their own BS (O.k, ok, Borderline-Schmaltz. right?) on "magical reality", upon the unsuspected.

It all relies on the fact, that Quantum Mechanics does not pretend to explain reality, only carefully measure it's behaviour, exactly as-it-it. And Accurate, they are, Oh-boy they are, and everyone, including frauds and charlatans, know it, if only by it's widely known reputation.

The old traditional role of science, to explain nature, was in direct competition with religion, giving it centuries of hard-time for it.

Only now that science no longer attempts to interpret reality, it leaves this to a flood of alternative wacko-attempts at it, using Quantum Mechanic's reputation in the amazing accuracy of measurement, for this unholy job of giving the unsuspected, a fair amount of your-own brand of BS.

This really is a new-age quest for glory, so that everyone will worship you as the new messiah of interpretation to nature's behaviour, the one who managed to give reality a new explanation, only using Quantum Mechanic's proven measurements as a backup.

The common use of the term "Quantum magic" meaning a phenomenon managing to escape a common macro-type of rationalisation, didn't help to resolve the situation. There is a real problem here, and it is that people are still hungry for macro-type of rationalisations for everything they can grasp.

This, unfortunately does not apply to the atomic and sub atomic world, in which plenty of so-called magic, is the name of the game.

Know alternative remedy for this is to picture particles as "interactive force-fields", kind of a "probability-cloud of potential energy" for each particle participating in this continuous endless interactive field we call "the universe".

It works to ease my restless mind, for leaving explanations aside, and get to the description, fascinating by it's own right, instead.
