Relay Output Would Work in the Place of Transisterized Out Put?

09/24/2010 6:04 AM

Hi Dears,

I have OMRON E3S-CL2 transistorized output photo-eye at box making machine for detecting the boxes. The max speed of machine is 450box/min and so the photo-eye max output frequency is almost 8HZ. Now photo-eye is creating a problem and I want to replace it with Hokoyu PLX-701R relay output type. This photo-eye (Hokoyu) has a property that it detects the SS sheet and when any kind of object passes under it, it output highs. this is a very good property which I want to use at machine where the different colored jobs disturbs the OMRON photo-eye. But I am not certain if relay can operate properly at 8HZ and also the life of its contacts is also an issue.

Any idea?

The PLX-701R response time is specified as 20ms, which should just about operate up to 25Hz.

A much bigger concern is the relay electrical life. This is specified as 100,000 operations, which at 8Hz only comes to about 3½ hours!

Suggest you find another sensor with a solid state output. Talk to the suppliers (Omron and Hokoyu) explaining your problem - maybe Omron have something less colour sensitive, or Hokoyu have a similar product to the PLX, but with solid state output. If this doesn't help, try some other suppliers. Sick, for instance, or Keyence.

John's right. Sick has some solid state (PNP or NPN output) registration sensors that you can actually teach. Here's a link to their site. (usual disclaimer)
