Insulate Roof or Not?

09/26/2010 7:15 PM

I have removed the old suspended headliner from my 1965 English car and see that there is horsehair or similar insulation that has 'dropped' off the roof. It was glued there prior to the headlining being installed.
Is there any point replacing this?
Is the insulation for noise or heat?

It's probably for both noise and heat. I would replace it, but with a modern alternative. I don't know what they are using in new cars these days, but it seems to have good insulating properties. I'd find some of that for a replacement material.

I'd look it up, but I'm sure you can google as well as I can.

Yes definitely replace it. The insulation does three jobs although two are related, 1, it helps in retaining warmth in the car in cooler climates, and to a lesser degree heat out when hot., It stops to a great degree "drumming" caused by wind flowing over the roof. and 3 it improves/reduces the overall noise level in the car.

There are a number of different insulation materiels about, 3M do an "automotive" acoustic foam which is ideal for this application and can be glued inplace and is light.

The "tar" based insulation is good for the floor and inside of doors. The heat of the sun on the roof tends to make it (tar based insulation)run...

If you want to feel the difference hire a delivery van without a hoodlining in winter and try and spend a night in it. Also you will hear how noisey the drumming can be when you drive it at freeway/motor way speed.

Insulation makes all the difference between base models and luxury ones.

Thanks for the reply. You have convinced me. After reading your reply, I bought a 15mm acoustic foam from Clark Rubber (foam and rubber specialist retailer in Australia) that should do the trick. Not perfect as it's pretty light but as much weight as I'm prepared to add above the headlining.

It also serves as a cushion against the pot holes where I live.

Where I live, most ceilings drop down in less than 6 years.

The mouse foam detoriates with heat and moisture and pulverizes.

I did the Mercedes that has a second plastic roof - took that out - and used a white slow drying glue that is used to stick fiberglass sheet against walls in the house.

It is a big job and the latest repairs I do with an injection needle, through the fabric.

For the Dodge Caravan. Same glue is dotted through and bonds the dust particles, fabric and metal or plastic ceiling. The result, if well done is not ugly. Have bad experience with thixotropic - contact cements - they don't seem to resist the temperature.

greatly reduces noise and "drumming" also eliminates condensation.

This is there to stop the roof droning its the same as the patch they put under a stainless steel sink it make it more quiet,in your roof I would try to obtain some self adhesive sound insulation it comes in all thicknesses & you can get one that has a foil backing to reflect the heat which would be an advantage down there in one of our colonial out posts,Hope this is of some help cobbler.

Thanks all. I have glued the insulation obtained above in and it appears to work really well. Tap on the boot (trunk) - no insulation yet - and it goes 'ping' - tap on the roof now and it goes 'thud'.

Glued in with 3M hi-tack 76 spray adhesive (recommended in other forums).

Guess I'd better do the doors and boot (trunk) now.
