Two Transformers in Parallel

09/27/2010 6:47 PM

Good morning sirs

Is it possible to connect two identical transformers in parallel to double the output current ? or it is better to have one with double rating ?

Great Regards

Yes, this can be done but it is just as easy to wire the phasing wrong or to have the transformers to become imbalanced in their output voltages to create serious problems. So if this is a temporary assembly that will be carefully monitored, go for it. But I'm certain that you will find that a properly sized single transformer will be less expensive and more reliable than two smaller transformers.

There are many approaches practiced, for a given load:

1 x 100% apprach

2 x 100% approach

3 x 50% approach

4 x 33% approach

It all depneds upon the amount you are ready to invest & the operational flexibility deisred.

You can double the current but not in transformer but in the feeder.sharing of load happens here.the conditions are very important here.same phase connection, same frequency, same capacity, same turns direction in transformer and much more.please study the topic.

If you've got the transformers already the answer is yes. So long as they are identical and wired correctly. I've been running 8 240/115V transformers in parallel for 15 years now.

If you haven't, buy a bigger one.
