How Much Current Can Supply a Battery

09/28/2010 2:08 AM

A battery say 12V 45AH means it can supply 45A in one hour, 22.5A in 2 hours.......... Can it supply more than 45A (say 90Amp in 0.5hours)?

May be but not necessary.

There is a parameter called "maximum discharge current" of the battery which is independent of its stored energy (AH)

This may be quite high (about 9A for AA cells) but not necessarily one that meets your requirement.

The internal resistance of the cell usually takes care of it - the terminal voltage drops and thereby limiting the current. However it is not safe to depend on it, since if it does not properly regulate, the cell will be destroyed.

View product profile on web site hbl.in

Download one of product catalog and understand battery discharge capabilities. Details are available.

The battery manufacturer usually determines the maximum discharge current for you Pilgrim.

Generally the AH rating mentioned in any battery is 10 hour rating. For example, the 45AH battery is designed to deliver 4.5 A continuously for 10 hours. It is the continuous rating./ However in substation, where the battery is used for protection purpose, simaltaneous tripping of number of feeders,It can supply even 45A for a short duration , and successfully trip all feeders, provided the voltage dip is within the allowable limit./ Instead If you are using Battery source for for MOD (Motor Operated Devices) switches, you have to size the battery only based on the 10 hour AH rating.
