600VAC Switchboard at 9636kw

09/28/2010 4:43 AM

Hello Guys,

Just want to ask if there's somebody here has an experience in designing/building a 600VAC switchboard at around 9700kw. We are in conceptual stage in selecting power generation for a barge. The proposal,

-The switchboard will be power by 6 sets of diesel generator at 1606kw, 600v, 60Hz, 3ph, 0.8pf each

-big loads are SCR drives for DC motors(1600hp x 4 set, 2000hp x 1), input voltage is 600VAC.. other loads are barge auxilliary

The rated current on the bus bar will be 11590A, is it feasible the busbars will be very big?

our other options is to increase the generating voltage but we need to provide additional sets of step-down transformer to get 600V.

Any suggestion guys..

Frame size restriction for LV circuit breaker is 6000 Amps. Current Sizing of bus bars is not a big issue but you have to deal with high magnitude short circuit current. My suggestion is to break up the load in two sections to be powered by individual set of generators

I know it's old technology but I think you should be looking at putting current limiting reactors in the main bus. Spilt it in to 3 sections with 2 reactors between them. 2 generators for each section, 2 1600HP motors fed off the 2 outer sections and the 2000HP off the centre.

The fault currents would be horrendous without.

thanks guys for the reply, appreciate it. plan to split the switchboard into two and connect it through bus tie(breakers & cables) with fault current limiter.
