Sticky Material Compound?

10/02/2010 1:08 AM

Can someone tell me what the material is that is often used to hold ads in place in magazines? It is sticky/tacky, translucent and often slightly amber in color. It stretches and then snaps away from the surface. Any residual material comes off readily by rubbing or pulling. Is it available in other forms? Can it be cast?

Thanks

I don't know the name of it, maybe tacky glue, but I do know that you can get it at any craft store. It comes in tubes and is used for a temporary glue on craft projects.

In my industry (theatre) we call it "snot tape", it is typically a 'backless' adhesive strip. Sorry I don't know more

This sounds a lot like rubber cement, although it is probably a variation in the conventional formulas. Visit a craft shop- once used extensively for leatherwork. There are spray-on versions as well...

Sticky material is resin and name of the resin is PVAc. PVAc is dissolved in solvent and then used by brush

If it is water based then it is PVA and is dissolved in water and used.

Both material is some time amber in color because of age of resin or resin quality.

Glue Dots or a Glue Lines most likely come in a commercial application that are applied using a heat method which would turn the material an amber golden color. Contact Glue Dots International,New Berlin, WI 1-888-GLUEDOTS or www.gluedots.com

They do not use hot glue technology to hold poster. This is very common in India to stick movie poster on wall and those are PVA dissolved in water and guy will brush back of paper and stick it to wall. Wall will absorb water and glue get solid.

Sticky glue is is generally PVAc type in organic solvents and you brush it then remove the solvent it will be sticky and you can stick paper to the glue. It is drying temperature which is important and is generally 25 oC overnight and then you separate glued paper using wax paper and use it when you need it

Hi,

the material you describe is very likely to be a hot-melt (ruber based) autoadhesive or [pressure sensitive. You can cast it in block ( actually it is sold as it to be melted in a Hotmelt machine.

I used to sell them when working with NATIONAL STARCH ( now HENKEL) you can contact them for more details www.henkel.com

Hope this will help

I am not sure he is looking for hot-melt adhesive, Pressure sensitive adhesive may be. He is looking some thing call scotch tape type adhesive in glue form you can put on wall or cardboard and then you can stick picture on the sticky adhesive. How strong I am not sure looking for multiple use it appears that it is his choice.

Hi Guest,

It's a latex or a solvent soluble resin containing a certain quantity of tackyfier, resin still gluish all the time in the air. When this blend is applied to a surface and covered with something else, the surface and the new material stick or glue together. The resin or the latex gives the strength of the adhesion, and the tackyfier the stickiness, Gil.

I know exactly what you are talking about. It is used by graphic artists to temporarily stick pictures, text boxes etc. onto a background and rearrange it until the composition is o.k. to send to the printers. It is just called art gum.

The trade term for that material is "fugitive glue". It is often referred to as "credit card glue" because we see it most often in those annoying credit solicitations. Fugitive glue is available in a variety of forms, including bricks, hot gun sticks, caulking gun tubes and others. One source is http://www.glu-stix.com/shop/page/product_detail/Product/24a8b1b94b2c8ce448edf3d10539c3fa.html. Although I've never tried it, I suspect that casting would be relatively simple.
