How to Eliminate ZSS Problem Occuring Due to Walky Talky

10/03/2010 3:50 PM

Hi all,

I am working in steel industry so there we use conveyor system to transport Raw material. We use ZSS(Zero Speed Switch) or ESS(Electronics Speed Switch) to avoid any mechanical damage. We are facing some problem that ZSS units are getting operated when some1 use walky talky near to ZSS.

I think this is due to frequency of walky talky...

m i right???

Please give suggestion to avoid or minimize above problem...

Since this can lead to undesired, unwanted or dangerous situations, you'll need to

1. Identify, quantify and localize the event.

2. If possible, eliminate the interference of both items through:

2.1. Elimination of one or.

2.1. Isolation or restriction.

First ideas in my mind: replace the walky talkies by non interfering ones, used different frequencies or modulation, but eliminate the use of similar types again.

Isolate the electronics of the conveyor control in grounded metal cabinets or shielding materials.

How far you go with this, I leave to your discretion. Feedback and more details appreciated.

thanx for ur advise.... what we had already done is that we replaced the walky talky and we covered the ZSS unit by a conducting plate and ground it. It increase the duration of fault but these methods are unable to completely eleminate the problem. I think walky talky might disturbing the IR frequency of ZSS SENSOR. wt do u thinks ???

A grounded plate is my next brainchild: where you ground it to? Bad grounds can generate as antenna, result: amplification - thus worse. Especially with high frequencies. You'll need a high grade Case or Cabinet of Faraday. Walky talkies of higher performance even work in steel tanks.

I know this would be inconvenient but you should be considering an embargo on the use of the radios until the matter is resolved. Mechanical damage aside consider the possibility of personal injury. Could the radio affect other parts of your control system?

You didn't say if your ZSS data is being transmitted by radio as well. If it is there are data radios available that can be bound, master to slave. Interference is less likely to occur in an RF rich environment. Here's an example.

@ TonyS : we are avoiding the use of walky talky near to ZSS unit. ZSS unit is stoping our conveyor system. sometime one unit stops whole conveyors as all are soft interlocked. Though there is no any mechanical or personal damage. walky talky is not affecting our other control systems. @ RDGRNR: we transmit ZSS data by control cable.

Most likely your ZSS unit is picking up RF signals as noise and is sensitive enough to it that it causes a false trip command. As dvmdsc said you must discover the real source of the problem instead of wildly guessing. Isolate everything and methodically add them back in to your system while transmitting with the radio to observe where the RF is having that effect.
