Title of the Thread Has Changed

10/08/2010 7:42 AM

I've seen a couple of posts now that the title of the thread has changed, in one the posts even changed. I can't go back and edit my own posts when I spot a typo after the time limit has run out. This has got to be the doing of a moderator, if it is then indicate it in the post.

Hi Tony,

You should be able to modify the title in a reply post up the top

Moderators change titles for several reasons - mostly for the benefit of the users:

  • If the original title was someone's name or job title (sometimes people misinterpret the meaning of the "Title" field)
  • If the original title did not relate in any way to the subject matter of the post
  • If the original post title was a single word, such as "motor", and would attract better responses if the title explained what type of motor (DC motor, part number, what the specific question was, etc.)
  • To add SEO (search engine optimization) value to the title - making it easier to find that content in Google and on CR4's search to refer to later

In general, a more specific title means that more people may read that post and it will be easier to find via search. It's not harmful because it doesn't change the context of the post.

Users can and do change the reply titles in the comments.

Hi Tony,

After the 15 minute limit, you can't do anything with your posts.

I have had the titles of my threads changed, I assume by moderators, but it's only been to better describe what my thread is talking about.

The moderators will delete or edit parts of posts that they consider inappropriate, and you will find that the criteria for what is and isn't appropriate is always slightly different, depending on who the moderator is.

I doubt the moderators are going to indicate changes to a post, but you can rest assured that it's one of them, since they are the only ones that have this ability.

I have been a moderator and administrator for a German site. I would never consider altering the text of a post under any circumstances other than one, to alter links to porn sites to something innocent. I have deleted texts but would never alter the post text.
To me it compromises the board's integrity.

Moderators don't change the content/context of the message - just the title. Doing so actually helps the original poster with answers in many cases.

As you've probably seen during your time here, some of CR4's members are not kind when users have trouble communicating their thoughts with words. An improved title at least increases the chances of having a post looked at or found via search later on.

The only time I've ever seen text within a post touched, is if there is an offensive sentence within the post. They will delete the sentence, but leave the rest of the post untouched, and there will be a note stating that, that part of the post was deleted, blah, blah, blah, for whatever reason....

I would like to think that if a moderator was found to be altering the actual text of someone else's post, that they wouldn't remain a moderator for long. I've never seen any evidence of any moderators tampering with the text of a post, other than what I've just mentioned.

In fact, if you could find the post you're referring to, and how it was altered, I wouldn't be surprised if someone over at mission control would be interested in having a look.
