Motor Enclosure Type vs. IP Rating

10/08/2010 3:35 PM

Does anyone know of a cross reference list which will compare "standard" motor enclosures (ie. TEFC, TENV, etc.) against IP (Ingress Protection) Ratings (ie. IP54, IP65, etc.).

It seems I spend more time finding a motor's IP rating as it does to size the motor itself. I assume there is a simple correlation between the two, but I need some documentation to support my design notes.

Try Google, there are many hits - I did not find a specific comparison chart but here are a few examples of what can be found:

Thank you for the reply. I have tried Google and understand the IP vs. Motor Enclosure ratings. As I mentioned though; what I am looking for is a "specific comparison chart" (if one exists) which I can add to my design notes (for medical equipment) which will allow the published motor enclosure information of a motor (ie. TEFC) to the IP rating (IP54). For example; I know that a TEFC motor equals a IP54 but I need a document which show an auditor that a TEFC equals a IP54 (paperwork you know).

Thanks anyways for the help. Just trying to find a way to reduce our research and documentation time.

From:

Ingress Protection IP Ratings

European and North American Comparison In North America, the NEMA classification is used in preference to the IEC codes shown above.

The IEC and NEMA degrees of protection can not be fully compared as equivalent ratings - see below. The NEMA Standard includes tests for environmental conditions such as mechanical damage, corrosion, rusting, ice formation, etc.
Further information can be found about the North American classification scheme in NEMA Standard Publication 250 and UL 40 Standard Publication.

NEMA Enclosure
Type Number
Approximate
IEC Classification
1IP 10
2IP 11
3IP 54
3RIP 14
3SIP 54
4 and 4XIP 56
5IP 52
6 and 6PIP 67

There is no strict correlation between motor enclosure types and IP ratings. For example, you can find TEFC motors that are IP44, IP54, IP55, IP56, etc. Equally TENV motors can be anywhere between IP20 and IP56.

The IP rating is determined by the degree of protection to the ingress of water or solids, not by enclosure type.

Any reputable motor supplier should be able to state the IP rating for any motor size and type. Certainly for IEC AC motors, the IP rating usually forms part of the model description.

1. What is NEMA Design B means

2. What is the NEMA rating for TEFC

3. if motor is suitable for Class 1 , Group D - then its enclosure is according UL or NEMA rating
