What's the Chance of That?

10/11/2010 3:49 PM

Hi all

Had to share this. Today I had been using varnish with a group of students. I put some in a yoghurt tub so they wouldn't waste it and afterwards was about to return the leftovers to the tin when tradgedy struck. I knocked the tin which was more than 3/4 full off the desk. It hit the floor and the lid shot off. As I gasped in horror I saw that the lidless tin was now upside down on the floor with most of the contents still inside. When I stopped laughing I slid an acetate sheet under it and then a piece of plywood to steady the acetate and turned it over to reveal I had only lost a very small amount and had saved the rest. Has this ever happened to anyone else or have I won the varnish lottery.

I don't know about winning the varnish lottery but it is worth a GA as far as I'm concerned!

I had a similar incident with a 1 gallon plastic pail, about 1/3 filled with exterior house stain on a concrete patio.

Being about 12 years old at the time, my results did not turn out as good as yours.

I figured that I could turn the pail back over really, really fast and be able to save the stain and concrete patio. Didn't work out that way.

Thankfully there was a garden hose nearby and my Dad was not.

When I was younger one of the stunts we would do was to put the tip for the waitress in a glass filled to the rim with water, and invert it on the table. The trick was to place a plastic menu over the glass, and invert it. Then, place the glass upside down on the table, and pull the menu out. Priceless reaction the first time the waitress has it done to her.

What a great story ... thanks.

Good to know that Murphy doesn't always win.

I hope your students got to see your "save" ... sometimes a lesson in ingenuity is better than a lesson in varnishing.

Kind regards ...

Unbelievably, I saw a guy in the University of Tasmania bar accidentally drop a 10 oz beer glass that was 3/4 full and whilst falling it rotated fully 360 degrees (upside down and back upright) and he caught it the top of his foot and balanced it till he could grab it by hand, losing an estimated 1 oz of beer. Unrepeatable!!

Good thing, otherwise he might have been accused of alcohol abuse.
