TEMA FSE FEA RCB 8

10/12/2010 6:04 AM

Hello everyone, I was trying to perform a finite element analysis of a heat exchanger expansion joint on ANSYS following RCB 8 of TEMA. I modeled it according to Figure RCB 8.42, applied boundary conditions as per RCB 8.41 and determined spring rate. Now to determine deflection to be applied, I need a parameter "Axial membrane stress (S)" as mentioned in RCB-8.42 which is to be computer but how, that I don't know and is not explained. Can anybody kindly guide me? Plz Regards, Tabby Mulla

The axial membrane stress in the shell should be calculated and is usually performed along with the tubesheet calculations. If using ASME Code Part UHX for the fixed tubesheet calculation, the shell axial membrane stress sigmas,m can be used as calculated in UHX-13.5.10 Step 10 for each loading case. The deflection calculated is for the entire FSE and 1/2 of this value should be used in the axisymmetric model, if one FSE is being used in the heat exchanger.
