New Name for Weight Boot for Knee Injury Exercise

10/14/2010 2:13 PM

Is there a new name for one of these (the bit which straps to the foot):-

I was given one when I injured my knee about 25 years ago. It helped a lot, and, I could really use one again.

I've searched for physiotherapy for injured knees, in all sorts of combinations. Searching for "weight boot" with other key words gets lots of very old articles like the one I cut the above picture from, but, I can't find one to buy anywhere.

The ankle weights which you fix with Velcro aren't heavy enough; you need to be able to fit a dumb bell with varying weights.

Has this exercise gone out of fashion, or, should I be looking for a different term?

I couldn't find them either. I think they have been replaced with these.

I think my wife might object to one of those in the bedroom.

Unless of course it came with the attachment to replace this decrepit old fool.

Great thanks GA.

"Iron boot" was obviously the search term I needed. www.atomicathletic.com also look very reasonably priced. I'll have to figure out whether it's cheaper to pay the extra premium or the postage across the pond.

Randall,

These days, I believe that Iron Boots have been largely replaced pace corelite by smaller contraptions which you then use in different exercise routines.

Wrist and Ankle weights come in different sizes, i have had knee problems in the last few months and I have returned to these, which strap on with Velcro. I have 1 kg and 2 kg sizes That is per leg weights. I am sure that you can get bigger weights but beware not to go too fast.

I used to use bracelet weights of similar sizes in swimmimng to strengthen the arm, wrist muscles but these seem to have gone out of fashion recently.

You then need a physio or exercise specialist to prescribe you some exercises to get those muscles/ligaments/joints moving again. I changed gyms yesterday to get better support.

I wish you lots of good luck and stronger limbs and joints.

Thanks Sleepy.

pace corelite I didn't understand this phrase.

All,

I think I'll stick with the iron boots. I'll post back when I decide the cheapest option.

Randall,

You and I live at opposite ends of the A414 which is the road that I have ended up travlling the most over my lifetime!

Pace means depite or in spite of, so here I was saying in spite of what corelite was saying you can do the following. Often used after referring to a speech, pace Churchill the Egyptian campaign went well for the UK.

The weights that I refer to can be purchased at most Sports shops although these days Tesco seem to be a good, inexpensive source. I have some knee exercises that I could try sending you! All are aimed at strengthening the muscles surrounding the knee. It could be a good idea to get a professional opinion as my knees seemed to suffer in the same ways, but the Right Knee turned out to be a flexion issue and the Left knee is a torn muscle where it attaches to the bone - The first is on the mend, slowly bur surely whilst the left knee gets worse after certain exercises, which I am trying to pin point. Your physio may have better ideas!

Do you belong to a gym? i have just changed gyms as I was getting very poor service at the old one that I had been with for 15 + years.

I have been referred to an Integrated Orthopedics group which consists of a Physio team working with a surgical team so that at any time I can be cross referred. This is all on the NHS.

If you want to stay in contact on this I would be happy to exchange PMs with you.

Let me know and i will try and workout how to do that!

You can trey putting weights in a sock and tying that round your ankle to exercise at home, or most sports shops now have weights in velcro fastening strips, to fix to your wrist or ankle for while you are walking about - no need for costly imports and shipping.

whatthef

Thanks

As I said above,Tescos have become a good source for items like these; you do need one of the larger Tesco's.

If you are located in the USA then one of the 'Marts should do them.

Kmart used to sell the Bracelet weights which are even simpler but mine have crumbled and I cannot replace them in theUK at this moment, They were especially good for swimming as you could do 10 lengths without weights and then slipe some weights on to your wrists to do 10 more very quickly. for 10 read your programme!

Thanks again

Sleepy
