Windows Vista Sidebar Will Not Start

10/15/2010 4:58 AM

Greetings All,

The last few times I have started up my ACER ASPIRE 5315-2698, my sidebar has failed to initialize.

When I try to manually initialize it I get the following message "Settings.ini is being used by another process. Close the other program and then click retry, or click Cancel to exit Sidebar".

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium.

My question is - Were do I look to see exactly what the other process is that is using Settings.ini? I would like to turn the "other" process off.

I have opened task manager but can not ascertain what the other process is that is running. Something changed recently but to the best of my knowledge, I did not intentionally change or add anything.

I did a search on CR4 and Google and did not find anything specifically related to this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all - KJK

Here's my Google search result.

http://www.google.co.uk/#q=Settings.ini+vista+sidebar&hl=en&biw=1020&bih=587&rlz=1R2GGLL_en-GB&ei=t0y4TIvNAd6N4gaNj9i9Dg&start=10&sa=N&fp=9a7587d64411ae40

I'd try going the system restore route first...simply restore to a date prior to your sidebar problems.

Hi Woody,

I saw these and went through several of them. I found nothing specifically related to my question. (although it was 3AM when I started browsing them) .

As far as a system restore, problem is my system restore says I have a restore point of 03/03/2010 but when I click restore, a message pops up to create a system restore point. In other words, the system can not see/find the 03/03/2010 restore point.

This why I asked if there is an application that I can go into to see exactly what is using the .ini app. I figured if it is a non critical app, I could shut it down or delete it.

I posted on the Vista forum and am waiting for a reply but I thought I would try here to see if anyone knew what app I could run to reveal the program that is using .ini.

Thanks anyway, I appreciate your effort.

KJK

Location of settings.ini and Associated Malware

Check whether settings.ini is present in the following locations:

  • C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\control-center\settings.ini
  • C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\CCenter\settings.ini
  • C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\CC\settings.ini
  • C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Ctrl-Center\settings.ini
  • C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\CtrlCntr\settings.ini
  • C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temp\NI.UGES_0001_N122M2111\settings.ini
  • C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temp\NI.UGDC_0001_N122M2610\settings.ini
  • C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temp\NI.UWA6P_0001_N822M1605\settings.ini
  • C:\Program Files\WinAntiSpyware 2007\settings.ini
  • C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temp\NI.UGA6P_0001_N115M0110\settings.ini
  • C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temp\NI.UGA6P_0001_N122M2210\settings.ini

If you find settings.ini in any of these locations, your computer is very likely to be infected with the following malware:

Notes:

IMPORTANT: Malware files can be camouflaged with the same file names as legitimate files. The settings.ini file is associated with malware only if found in the locations listed above.

Why Is It Important to Remove Malware Files?

It is imperative that you delete malware-associated files as soon as possible because they can be used - or are already being used - to inflict serious damage on your PC, including:

  • Disrupting the normal functioning of the operating system or rendering it completely useless.
  • Hijacking valuable private information (credit card numbers, passwords, PIN codes, etc.)
  • Directing all your Web searches to the same unwanted or malicious sites.
  • Dramatically slowing down your computer.
  • Gaining total control of your PC to spread viruses and trojans and send out spam.

How to Remove settings.ini

  1. To enable deleting the settings.ini file, terminate the associated process in the Task Manager as follows:
    • Right-click in the Windows taskbar (a bar that appears along the bottom of the Windows screen) and select Task Manager on the menu.
    • In the Tasks Manager window, click the Processes tab.
    • On the Processes tab, select settings.ini and click End Process.
  2. Using your file explorer, browse to the file using the paths listed in Location of settings.ini and Associated Malware.
  3. Select the file and press SHIFT+Delete on the keyboard.
  4. Click Yes in the confirm deletion dialog box.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 for each location listed in Location of settings.ini and Associated Malware.
Deleting Locked Files

You can delete locked files with the RemoveOnReboot utility. You can install the RemoveOnReboot utility from here.

After you delete a locked file, you need to delete all the references to the file in Windows registry.

To delete a locked file:

  1. Right-click on the file and select Send To -> Remove on Next Reboot on the menu.
  2. Restart your computer.

The file will be deleted on restart.

Note: In the case of complex viruses that can replicate themselves, malware files can reappear in the same locations even after you have deleted those files and restarted your computer. Exterminate It! can effectively eradicate such viruses from your computer.

To remove all registry references to a malware file:

  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit and click OK. The Registry Editor window opens.
  3. On the Edit menu, select Find.
  4. In the Find dialog box, type FILENAME. The name of the first found registry value referencing settings.ini is highlighted in the right pane of the Registry Editor window.
  5. Right-click the registry value name and select Delete on the menu.
  6. Click Yes in the Confirm Value Delete dialog box.
  7. To delete all other references to settings.ini, repeat steps 4-6.

bwire,

The problem was winantispyware. Don't know how I got this little beast but the wifey swears she did not download anything .

We are back up and running normally.

I am useless when it comes to software trouble shooting although I learned quite a bit resolving this issue.

Your links and info helped - thanks for your help and time!

What anti-virus program do you use? I have

Norton 360 which has kept threats at bay for 2 years now. It has many features that operate transparently in the background (see below). Every couple of days I run the comprehensive scan overnight since it could take a while. This usually finds some threats tucked away in some inconspicuous directory.

I have no financial interest in Norton - just offering my experience.

About total protection

Norton 360 offers total protection of your PC that includes antivirus and spyware protection, online identity theft protection, backup, and PC tuneup capabilities. It provides a complete protection against a wide range of threats, leaving you free to work and play confidently on your PC.

After you install Norton 360 and set up a backup storage destination, it then does all the rest. You do not have to do anything else to be protected. However, Norton 360 also lets you customize your firewall settings or adware protection, or set your own schedule for automatic activities.

Norton 360 is grouped into the following four categories of protection:

PC Security Blocks and removes viruses and spyware from email and downloaded sites, protects against emerging threats, scans, and cleans email attachments
Identity Protection Helps to guard against identity theft, verifies authenticity of popular Web sites
Backup Backs up photos, music, and documents to a variety of storage locations
PC Tuneup Finds and fixes common computer problems, cleans up unwanted cookies and files, and defragments the hard disk to optimize PC performance

corelite,

I have Norton 360 also. The wifey finally told me that she got an error message that appeared to be from Windows. She clicked yes to what ever the message was and she started getting all kinds of pop ups. One of the pop ups was to subscribe to some AV program.

The bug she down loaded took over the .ini file and like I said, generated a bunch of AV pop ups.

I agree with you about Norton 360, it is good. We have been running Norton for 5 years and this is our first problem.

I sent a message on the Norton web site asking why the AV bug was not detected. I am waiting for a reply.

While you wait for Norton to reply download and run...
http://www.malwarebytes.org/ free edition.

There is a possibility that the resident malware will recognise this downloaded prog by it's name ...you may need to rename the download to get a succesful installation and possibly rename the installed prog before you can run it.
