Composite Fiber Selection

10/17/2010 11:04 AM

I'm currently part of a venture capital group based out of Chicago. We're looking for help with one our projects and would like to reach out to the engineering community for assistance.

We're looking to select a fiber that is lightweight, extremely flexible, and able extremely difficult to penetrate with thin sharp needles (kinda like a titanium skin, however we would need to be finer). We've been in touch with most consultants here in Chicago, who have not been able to help us at all.

If anyone has any expertise in this area or could provide any resourcse, I'd love to hear back from you. Thanks!

Good luck.

If I were you, I contact some companies that make high performance fibers.

Google or Search GlobalSpec for "high performance fiber suppliers".

I'm surprised you can't find someone to take your money.

All you will get here is everyone's opinion about their favorite best fiber based on their personal opinion and specific use.

By 'fiber' I'm guessing you mean some sort of 'material' or 'textile' perhaps for protective wear?

As noted by JE, we would require a lot more information. What is intended use (or general ideas if proprietary), what are limitations (thermal, weight, etc.), why "thin, sharp needles". Unfortunately, you may be up against the richest and most research oriented competitor in this, the US Army/US Government. If they haven't already investigated every possible material (on our tax dollar), then I would be extremely shocked. With regard to "thin, sharp needles", you most certainly are excluding any woven type material that would have potential openings at each weave intersection, so not sure we can give you any good solutions.

Yes you can do this using sol-gel coated titanium fiber. They will be as flexible as titanium fiber at the same time you may not be able to puncture using sharp object. The art and heart of technology is control oxidation.

In past I have done using aluminum fiber and then coating the fiber with borosilicate glass using simple fiber drawing equipment but they had limited flexiability ( you can make 90 degree bend of the fiber

Look at http://www.turtleskin.com/Police-Gloves.aspx. These folks make gloves that resist 28ga needles. They were the source for the NASA inflatable air bags. Follow their link to "Inflatables" for the NASA stuff.
