Steam Separator Level

10/18/2010 4:16 PM

Hi There

I have a Steam Separator with a Dp level transmitter calibrated correctly to 600 mmH2O

the process is at about 400KPA and 135 deg C Separator height about 1.2 meters

the problem I have is with the plant running and controlling the level at 50%

the sight glass has a level shown of about 80% but not sure if this is true or not

the tapping points for both devices are at the same height

any Idea out there would be great

I think its more a process problem as I have check the transmitter out with numbers of calibration checks

Thanks

Hi,

It doesn't sound like a process problem looks like either the transmitter or the sight glass is not giving the correct measurement.I always make sure that my instrument is working correctly before I blame it on something else in this case this is what I would do.

-Ask the control operator to put the control valve in manual

-block in and de pressure the transmitter, make sure that it's output goes to zero in the field and in the control room, pump it to 300mmH2O and check for 50% output in the field and in the control room do the same for 600mmH2O.

-Blow the High side and Low side down(be very careful) real good to make sure that they aren't partially plugged,if blowing them trough the transmitter, don't blow them down for too long or the electronics might get too hot and burn up.

-Put the transmitter back in service wait a few minutes for the legs to get full of condensate then see if the sight glass and the transmitter match.

If the transmitter and the sight glass don't match but the taps are clear and the calibration is good then we just eliminated the transmitter as the being problem.

Now we can say that the sight glass is not giving us the correct level.Possibly there is a problem with sight glass valve(s) or one or both of it's taps partially plugged up.

You stated that the transmitter's calibration its good so some or all of these steps you already performed. If you blow the taps down please be very careful, good luck.

Thank you
