Getting More Out of an Abrasive Grinding Disc

10/19/2010 12:18 PM

I used to work for a sheet metal company that went through tons of grinding disks a day.

7,5 and 4" disks. Someone one day purchased a wall mount tool that you could put the center of these disks on to and then clamp in much like how a can opening would work. You select your radius and start turning the handle. It would then cut down the 7" disk into a 5" disk so you have more usable abrasive life. Has anyone heard of the company or can point me in the direction to find one of these?

Thanks

Note to Doorman:

Dude, do we have one of these in our catalog?

Almost looks like a cartridge case trimmer. Maybe we could come up with a multi- use trimmer that could open cans too? Why don't you put your assistant on that?

I'm not a Dude, Bro!

Yeah, they work just about like a can opener. With the price of abrasives, these can recoup their purchase price in a few weeks. I only recall replacing one... we had it 5+ years, and the handle got broken off (shop guys, ya know). There are other types; I had best luck with the Morgen (Morgan?).

The LynDoor™ Industries catalog seems to be populated with items from the Museum of Unworkable Devices. If we start carrying functional stuff, we may lose our cred!

Thanks, guys. Just trying to be cooperative.

Thanks for that.

I'm afraid I lost the vision there, for a while.

Ditto from me. Those are cool. Of course the first thing that gets tossed on my angle grinders are the guards. When I'm done with a disc, it's usually toast. Plus I start with 5 inch.

Can I get some more information on this product? Morgen Manufacturing doesn't turn anything up.

Thanks

Do you use it for grinding or cutting. For cutting the discs become smaller in diameter anyhow.

Years in a row I used the 7,5 inch discs, and switching these to my 4 inch tool when they became small enough.

Never bought 4 or 4,5 inch discs for this reason.

I know the dangerous way to do the same

you need a bench grinder that's running

fire up angle grinder & apply the spinning disc to the bench grinders wheel at 90 degrees

you should stand off to one side

it's good if the wheel is clogged with aluminum or you need a square corner

this procedure is also good for flapper wheels that are down to the backing along the edge
