Honda City - Ground Clearance

10/21/2010 11:12 PM

I have a 2010 model Honda City car, driving through the potholes of Kerala - India roads.

The ground clearance is so very thin, that even on speed breakers / Humps, the underbody hits the ground on very low speed. The story is too bad if the car is loaded with passengers.

Suggestions from experts are welcome, so that I can impliment it after the manufacturer's warranty period.

Thanx in advance !!

refer to manufacturers hand book it will have ground clearance spec in there.

But i think you will find as with most cars that the car was designed with smooth surfaces only in mind.

for pot holed roads you need a cross country vehicle

Most roads in India are not meant for these foreign designed and manufactured cars in India and , Indian road conditions and Indian climate like ambient temperatures,Fuel quality sold in India adds more problems to car owners are not aware of Standards! and in India any thing and every thing gets certified for meeting standards for a price, cant do a thing about problems of car owners, except pay up for repairs and don't buy these foreign designed cars if you want to have piece of mind,

You have already purchased THE CAR and have no choice. Reading manufacturer's specs is no use- which will only state what you are aware.

SUGGESTION 1) Go to local mechanic, pay additional amount and get additional springs fitted to raise the height. I know a friend of mine bought Maruti van and was using it for transporting goods made by his factory. Single leaf spring was incapable of taking the load etc etc. Hence he got 3 or 4 leaf stronger springs fitted at extra cost. 2) Sell of the car and and next look specifically at another Indian car (may be TATAs) which are designed specifically for Indian roads.

Thanks for giving publicity on sites like this- either the manufacturer (Honda_ takes note of it and modifies- or looses business.

This is a bit of shooting from the lip, but the cheapest way I know of to get more ground clearance is to put the tallest tire possible in the wheel well. This depends on how much room there is in the wheel well and if a tire with a better aspect ratio is available. It also depends on how much additional ground clearance is needed (never been to India). If tires are available and will fit in the wheel well, you might gain betweeen 2 and 5 cm. After that, you will need suspension changes as mentioned by others.

I only suggest tires because you can figure out the extra clearance before spending any money and tires are much cheaper than suspension components. If it works, you can implement the solution now and stay within warranty guidelines.

speedo wont be accurate though.

spacers on suspension is good keep exsiting springs but gain height

It's a good suggestion. In fact in Maruti SX-4 (which I own), manufacturar is offering two varients with different ground clearance just by different diameter wheels & tyre (180mm &190mm). But with lower dia tyre, there is lot of space in the wheel well. Much lower wheel well clearance may cause problem if driving through muddy roads. So Before going to higher dia wheels it important to know minimum required clearance, either from manufacturar or from auto standards.

Apart from the suggestions already provided, I would suggest that you protect your engine underbelly by installing a steel plate at the bottom. I know exactly what you feel since I owned a Honda City till recently before I sold it and did drive it in Kerala through potholes with every crunch at the bottom feeling like a sword thru ur heart!! My brother had arranged the installation of the plate by some local mechanic in Kochi. That did help since we knew that the atleast the engine section was safe. Nothing much you can do for the other sections though.

I have Honda City and had frequent problem of a local bump rubbing the bottom. I used to cross the bump little diagonally. ' After I have changed my old tires with new tires of maximum dia ( i Checked up diameters of various tires available) and then used nitrogen instead of air. I do not touch the bump now a days. With nitrogen your tire dia remains same since morning.

I am also fed up with bumps with Honda City 2007 & looking for the ways to increase Ground Clearance. I have surfed the net a lot but didn't get satisfactory answer/ solution elsewhere. Since you have been successful by changing the tyres, kindly share the information on size of tyres replaced by you, so that instead of wasting time on research again, I will take benefit of your experience.
