Cooling Towers Location

10/24/2010 6:40 AM

in HVAC system we have chillers and cooling towers and pumps I want to ask about the relation between the location of chillers and condenser pump and cooling tower:-

1- is should be locate the chillers and pumps in the same level ( what is the recommendation for this connection )

2- is should be locate the chillers below the cooling towers ( what is the recommendation for this connection )

It all depends upon how you plan to design your plant room layout. Cooling tower is used in conjunction with water cooled condenser. The lowest temperature to which water can be cooled in a cooling towers the wet bulb temperature of air surrounding the cooling tower. It can be either natural draft or mechanical draft. There are many factors which influence the location of Cooling towers, chillers, and pumps. Few of them are Capacity and size of plant, length of the chilled water pipe lines, type of building to be air conditioned, availability of plant room space. You can refer the local code or ASHRAE standards for more details.

This all depends on specific project.

However, without going into detail here, I would say--Cooling tower is always on roof or outside in the open.

Chiller and pumps are in the Mech. Equipment room. Also various clearances are required for maintenance of the chiller.

For specific help, u may contact me at rajk@gmx.us. Will be glad to help you

The tower should be above the pump inlet minimum 1/4" per foot fall from tower outlet to pump inlet, centrifugal pump are not self priming. Chiller elevation is only governed by static head but if you are above the tower sump you will naturally drain back to the sump and lose you chemical treatment when you overflow. If you are below the tower, every 20 storys is another 100psi of head on your condenser so you have to specify to the manufacturer. Your questions lead me to believe that paying an engineer to design this might work out to be a bargain in the ed.

In addition to the reading suggested by lynlynch, please review this Wiki article on Legionellosis, a disease that is caused by an aquatic organism that seems to LOVE hanging around in cooling towers.
