03/17/2007 6:18 AM

I want to do Grit (sand or shot) Blasting of drum shell. The material is SA 516 Gr 70 (Carbon steel) and thickness of drum is above 50 mm usually. But i want to know about which

type (either sand or metal shots)?

size (mesh size)?

grade (quality)?

and quantity of sand or shots or combination of both is used for surface preparation of drum shell before painting?

Please give me appropiate and complete information.

No Sand! Abrasive, dirty, hazardous dust.

"size (mesh size)? grade (quality)?"

"and quantity of sand or shots or combination of both is used for surface preparation
of drum shell before painting?"

How big is the drum or boiler?

What are you going to paint it with? Apexior for hot wet surfaces?

The split steel shot can be recovered from the scale, rust, dirt, etc. separated and reused so

"Please give me appropiate and complete information."

This should point you on your way via Google etc.

I assume this inquiry is about the interior of the drum. Be sure to plug the tubes to prevent the grit, dust, etc. from making more clean up work!

The size of boler drum is of Inside Diameter of 914 mm and length 2.5 meter.

First the double coat of Red Oxide Primer Paint will be done and then one coat of Silver Coloured paint.

Please tell me what type or grade of blasting material to be used and how much to be used.

A relatively small boiler. Unable to discern as to whether you are cleaning and painting the inside or outside. MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE !

"First the double coat of Red Oxide Primer Paint will be done and then one coat of Silver Coloured paint."

This indicates an OUTSIDE paint job for appearance. IF INTERIOR it would not last under the hot wet conditions inside a boiler.

I would use 2mm split steel shot and 10 - 20 kg to start with. Depends on the blasting equipment, air pressure, etc. You can tell after using, recovering, & reusing as to how much additional is required to finish job.

Thanks Mr. Stan,

I just want to introduce this kind of process in my shop as prior for bringing ASME Stamps in my company.

Anyway i dnt wannt to do interior surface blasting. As on trial or practice basis, external surface is allowed for blasting.

thanks for giving me size and qty. also. Even i contact to local suppliers also for having material for blasting.

There is one more information i need from ur side i.e. some kind of grades of blasting material also comes like SA 2 1/2. Can give me more about this

Thanks again

SA 2-1/2 appears to be the requirements for how the paint is applied per the following link <http://www.dot.state.oh.us/spec/514.htm>

I used <Google.com> entered "Blasting material SA 2-1/2" as search term.

As near as I can determine there is nothing specified as to the blasting material and everything so far indicates blasting sand is acceptable.

It has been a long time since I was involved in steam plant operations and maintenance. There have been many new requirements that did not exist then.

Hope the operation goes well.
