Military Diesel Generator Distribution Panel

11/02/2010 12:08 PM

I have looked over the site and couldn't find anything like this, please let me know if I missed a post with this answer. We have a Military Diesel powered Generator (circa 1978) with split lugs for the output in a side panel. I can get a rainproof commercial sub-panel and hook it up as as a distribution panel with breakers and receptacles, but wanted to find out what the military used in this case. It may be possible that I can get a one surplus to fit. For one thing, I don't know what the military would call such a distribution box, nor do I know if there is anything standard. Any help would be appreciated either in nomenclature or ideas.

Post more info, you will get more help.

Post the name plate info such as manufacturer, model number, volts, amps, single or 3 phase, the more info the better.

A picture of the "split lugs for the output in a side panel" would also be useful.

Thanks for your reply. This is a "Tactical Skid Mount" 10KW unit (Model MEP-003), it can be switched between 3-p 208/120, 1-p 240/120, and 1-p 120. We will use it on 240/120. Also, there are two 120 receptacles provided regardless of which power system is chosen. The units were designed to be parachuted into field positions to run kitchens and other needs for the troops. Out unit was sold as surplus years ago and spent its second life as a backup generator at a fire station. I need to set up a distribution panel for use on a remote location to run a welder and some drop cords. The generator output lugs are regular split bolt connectors. The diesel engine is an Onan - I haven't been able to determine who made the generator set, nor who put the whole thing together for the military. My question is: did the military have some standard box/panel that connected to the lugs so they could provide plug-in ability at the generator? If so, what would they call such so I can search online surplus sites. Otherwise, I can get a commercial outdoor subpanel and build my own. Sorry I wasn't clearer in my first post.

I have seen military 3 phase gensets with each stator lead brought out to a tap. This allowed different configurations for different voltages and single or three phase capability.

Distribution was done with a separate "spider" box.

Bob,

I did a Google search of "Tactical Skid Mount 10KW unit Model MEP-003" and got 573 search results back. I did a brief search of these and it appears that there is a lot of info on the MEP-003A series but not much on the MEP-003.

I checked a few out hoping to find specs or a picture of an auxiliary panel but no luck during my cursory search.

I did find a few forums during this search that had questions/answers on these types of gensets that you may want to check out and/or post on. Someone there may be more informed on your particular unit.

It seems to me that you could probably run a conduit out of the split bolt j-box to a weather proof breaker panel and you would be in business.

Obviously, if you are not experienced in electrical connections of this type call someone who is to ensure proper grounding and GFI protection so no one gets hurt or worse.

By the way, it sounds like you have a great, durable unit there!

Hope this helps - Good Luck

There may be an "A" at the end of the model number that I didn't see. I have found some commercial units - if you search "temporary power box" you can find them, but I'm having trouble determining conclusively if they have a 50A circuit included, plus they have twist lock receptacles that I'd have to adapt to. So I'm planning to use a 100A sub-panel and GFI breakers. We wont be working in wet weather anyway. Thanks for your help.

This type of genset was made to be used at forward deployed bases, and could be moved from place to place in relatively short order, so everything was a modular design. Usually a free-standing distribution box was used near the loads, with cables running back to the generator and connected directly to the split lugs. Rubber boots were used to insulate the split lug connections. When it was necessary to move, the entire setup could be disassembled & packed up in 5-10 minutes.
