Inverter Noise Level

11/03/2010 8:29 AM

Fellow Engineers. As far as i am concerned , your answers have really increased my knowledge.my one request to all of you is that when we ask some very basic question please dont scold us but try to help us as we are learners.

my simple question is why it is necessary to measure Inverter (vfd) noise.does noise play any part in the performance of 3 phase induction motors.

what is leakage of inverter noise.

I don't think that the noise level has any impact on the VFD performance, but whenever you use any equipment that produces noise, you must have to consider its noise level due to the environmental factor. But keep in mind, the quieter (less noise) is the equipment, the more expensive it is. Here, I have given some useful information about the noise.

(1) Some of the recommended level of noise in various environment:

Executive offices, large conference rooms: 35 dB

Private and semi-private offices, cafeterias, conference rooms (20 people): 45 dB

General offices, laboratories: 50 dB

Control rooms, typing areas: 55 dB

Workshop offices: 65 dB

Routinely, but not continuously Occupied Areas (e.g., Smoking Area, Personnel shelters): 70 dB

Workshops, machine rooms: 75 dB

Living Quarter area: 55 dB

(2) The noise level produced by some of the equipment/environment:

Whisper or Quiet Library: 30 db

Normal conversation (3-5'): 60-70 dB

Telephone dial tone: 80 dB

Power mower at 3': 107 dB

Snowmobile, Motorcycle: 100 dB

Jet engine at 100', Gun Blast: 140 dB

(3) OSHA's (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) Daily Permissible Noise Level Exposure for human:

90 dB – 8 Hours per day

92 dB – 6 Hours per day

95 dB – 4 Hours per day

97 dB – 3 Hours per day

100 dB – 2 Hours per day

102 dB - 1.5 Hours per day

105 dB – 1 Hours per day

110 dB - 0.5 Hours per day

115 dB - 0.25 or less Hours per day

Hope it helps.

I think you must first define for us if you are referring to electrical noise, i.e. power quality issues, or audible noise?

If audible, then are you referring to the noise actually make at the inverter, or the noise the inverter causes the motor to make?
