Excitation Current and TTR Testing

Let's say your TTR test set in the field breaks and you don't have a spare but you have a variac and VOM in the truck and plenty of wire.

Is it possible to use excitation current using a Variac and a VOM with calculator to measure TTR without a Turns to Turns Ratio Tester or would you need a Ratio Meter or TTR tester in order to perform a TTR test?

For example with a Y to Delta transformer

12470V to 480 with 30 degree angular displacement. Let's say 25.9 Nameplate ratio and 7200/480 = 15:1 wye primary L-N to Delta secondary L-L. and nampleate voltage ratio of 25.9/1.73 = 15:1

Is it possible to measure TTR w/o a TTR test set? If so, how?

Assuming TTR means transformer turns ratio.

Can test using analog meter + digital meter + Variac.

Using digital meter determine voltage when analog meter reads 100 volt.

Apply 100 volt as indicated by analog meter to high voltage winding.

Measure voltage using digital meter on low voltage winding.

Calculate turns ratio. (Exciting current has nothing to do with turns ratio)

Problem is test voltage drifting. It is easier to determine that the test voltage has drifted with an analog meter than with a digital meter.
Use 100 volt because it is easier to adjust variac when it is near it's maximum output voltage.

Be very careful while doing this--make sure you do as Carl says, apply the 100 volts from the variac to the high voltage winding, not to the low voltage winding!
