11/16/2010 10:29 AM

I have to quote and install some direct burial Fiber and we have had issues with workers cutting or current burial cables in the past. I have been asked to include a Trace Cable to be include what is the best way to do this?

By your term "trace cable" you are referring to cable "trace" or "tracer tape"?

If so, Google "buried electrical cable tracer tape". You will find many results.

I found this: http://www.bradyid.com/bradyid/scpv/Labels,-Markers-and-Tapes~Underground-Warning-Tapes.html

If not, Google "buried electrical cable tracer tape" and browse the results.

Anyway, a site drawing, red-lined (field marked) during excavation/installation/burial, given to the property owner to keep on file would not be a bad idea either.

We use metallic tape (trace) on all UG installations.

We also install non-metallic (plastic) bright yellow "Warning Buried Electric Cable" tape about 12 inches below grade, above the metallic trace which is typically 24" below grade (based on 36" trench depth).

The tape and a red line site drawing afford any future excavator an extra level of success in not destroying your (or any) existing installation.

Be sure to include the cost (of the tape/trace) and labor (to install it) in your bid.

Good Luck.
