Motor Sizing for Wheel Rotation

11/18/2010 9:25 PM

I am rotating a wheel (similar to bicycle tube) around a horizontal axis.

My wheel inertia or load inertia is 8 kg-m2. I need to rotate the wheel from 5-40 rpm So I need to use a electric motor with a gearbox.

Can anyone suggest a motor specification with the gear ratio for this application.

You need to specify what the angular acceleration will be. Other than friction losses, that is thing that determines your motor size. This will give you an idea of the formulas.

Hi raj26,

You could consider the method used to rotate tumble drier drums in that the drive belt passes around the circumference of the drum and is driven from a small diameter pulley on the motor shaft. This gives a tremendous speed reduction at low cost and a commensurate torque output. The cost saving of the gearbox could then be invested in a VSD to control the motor speed.

Good luck,

Massey.

A GA. You can make it even cheaper with a stepped drive wheel, sort of like a cheap turntable.

Thanks guys for your suggestions. I am not changing my set up. My boss has enough money to go with this set up. :):)

I will be putting the wheel directly on the rotating shaft. I calculated the rotating torque to fix my motor power capacity. Should i account for any other torque before rating the power requiremnt of the motor.
