Algae and Bio Fuels = CALL to ALL

03/21/2007 11:40 AM

Could the CR4 members and Guests please help build a bibliography of links to websites, Sources, and forums that address:

"algae research and development" (fresh water, salt water, and other)

"algae as a solar collector" including R&D and PRODUCTION

"algae as source for bio fuel" including R&D and PRODUCTION (ethanol, diesel, and other)

Your assistance would be appreciated!

Well, let's start with a few links that are already here on CR4:

Future Energy Sources 3.2 Biofuels from the blog An Engineer's Look at the Future of Energy.

Making biodiesel from scum from the Engineering News blog

Good starting point

I came across a website that does that already to which I gave several links.

www.oilgae.com

It is a good site to start looking for other websites because it contains quite a few links already.

Here is another one that also has many links on the site.

Dear all,

During the last couple of months I have come across various articles about genetic manipulation of both bacteria and algae with the purpose to increase usable energy output , be it as algaeoil, bio-ethanol or hydrogen. Looking through my favorite links I just found this one:

http://www.botany.utoronto.ca/courses/BOT251/labs/photosynthesislab42006.pdf

The focus in the genetic manipulation is generally about optimisation of the light absorbtion factor over the wavelength range. And that does not necessarily mean increasing the absorbtion factor of the algae cell. In fact the more a cell absorbs the more it also heats up and hence it can become less efficient. The article treated the changing of light absorbtion elements in the cell to reduce the absorbtion factor and let more light through to cell deeper in the pond and thus have a better temperature distribution with better operating conditions for each cell.

I hope you find the article behind the link useful and I am looking forward to some of your links as well.

Here is some new (4/17/2007) news on algaeculture/power plants

http://www.chemicalonline.com/content/news/article.asp?docid=3bfecd84-3b6a-49a4-8ceb-e87fba6dc572&atc~c=771+s=773+r=001+l=a&VNETCOOKIE=NO

A 1.48 gigawatt coal fired plant should be able to support about 21,000 acres with a potential yield/acre of 8,000 gallons(US) bio diesel and 5,000 gallons(US) of ethatol.

THAT IS A FAIR SIZE BUCKET OF FUEL!
