Compressor Technologies Comparision

11/25/2010 3:47 AM

Compressor manufacturer Sullair, USA have a model which uses mechanical arrangement maintain output pressure to desired level in place of a VFD. I want a comparision between VFD controlled compressor and the Sullair design, particularly on efficiency and reliability basis.

The mechanical arrangement to deliver desired discharge pressure involves altering the effective volume of compression chamber/casing. Though it is anadditional complisity to a plain compressor, still it could be preferable compared to Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). In VFD, there is whole lot of an added system and just not few componets.

G'Day

One of the main mistakes everyone makes is concentrating on the supply side rather than the demand side. So why do you want to compare the technologies?

Horses for courses, both may well be totally unsuitable for the application. Then again, both used together could be ideal for the system in mind?

I would suggest that we start from the point of use (the demand side), then work backwards and make a selection of compressed air equipment and technology (supply side) which best suits that demand.

No compressed air package (supply side) is any good, if the system that delivers it to the point of use has been poorly designed.

The air compressors specifc power may well be below 6kW/NM3/Min at 7 bar g. However, the site compressed air system may well be above 12kW/NM3/Min!

I have done lots of measurements on different plants where load/unload, VFD, VOC, VIC and modulation guide vanes etc. To say one is better than another is really not a good way to look at the tecnology, the application is.

Sorry if I am not much help.

Sullair have a VSD model that combine Variable displacement and VSD.

They claim that it is more efficient. the machanical Variable displacement is simple and not so complicated.

the VSD is also simple. It requires a frequency inverter which is properly adjusted to suit the operation.

The Cost is the only difficult aspect.

In any case, a VSD Only unit will be more efficient in controlling the output and reducing the electricity bill if properly setup, than a variable capacity unit. This is my opinion: the motor will still be running at full speed while the bypass is being modulated --> losses due to friction in the bypass and to the electric motor running less efficiently. Even though you will consume less power when modulating the bypass, your consumption will be more than if it was a VSD only drive:(Motor speed changes and is controlled by the VSD to keep the motor efficient) Also, no friction losses in the bypass...

A combination of both methods seems to be more efficient in adjusting pressure and Volume... according to Sullair. I think we can trust them!
