Siemens has a form of direct communications to their own drives from their own PLCs called USS protocol, using the serial comms port, which is RS-485 based. Get hold of a copy of the USS protocol and you can easily integrate the command and monitoring functions into your Step 7 program. It's a free download from Siemens, but only applies to Step 7 to Siemens VFD connections.
