Chiller Sizing for Coating Plant

11/30/2010 5:14 AM

Dear all,

We are going to buy a new water chiller for our coating plant. So I want to find out the chiller sizing. From where should I start now. The old chiller(which is inoperation has become under capacity)

This new chiller will pump cold water to 6 different locations(like heat exchangers, gear boxes etc) on the machine and all these locations are far away from each other. I can give you the maximum temperature and the minimum required temperature of these locations. So where I should start now?. Help me with all required calculations and formulas.

You need to determine to things first.

Q1) Heat load

Q2) Recirculating water pressure and flow requirements

A1) If you know the differential temperature and water flow accross the point of use demand, you can calculate the heat load. Use the formula (GPM x T(d) x C(p) x 500 = ****BTU/Hr; where T(d) is in degrees F and C(p) = 1.0 for water)

A2) The recirculating water flow can be determined by adding up all of the point of use demands. I would also add 20% to that value because you may want to have the ends of your distribution loop shunt back some water to maintain flow to prevent stagnation in dead ends.

A2) The required differential pressure is a little more difficult because it depends on your pipe design as well as what equipment you select. To start you first need to determine the highest pressure required at your points of use.

Can you provide the temperature and pressure reqirements for each point of use?
