Best Email Program for Windows 7

12/06/2010 9:37 PM

Just got my new PC with Windows 7 and MS neglected to include an email program! So what is the best email program for Windows 7? Pros, cons, cost, etc., let's hear what you like.

I use mozilla also. MS switched to web based windows live mail, which worked fine until I did a disk cleanup and it quit working.

Just yesterday I downloaded windows live 2011, which corrected the problem.

If you decide to download windows live, make sure you do a custom install. It includes windows live mail, but has gobs of other apps and programs that you may not need.

If it's a new machine, you probably have full support and a warranty, so you may want to go with windows live for main email and download mozilla for a back up program.

I use FireFox and like it, and Thunderbird sounds good. Any compatability problems with Gmail?

You don't need a email program if you use Gmail

Gmail [& windows Live] are stand alone web based email program(s) & for me are much more functional without the added confusion of thunderbird

Gmail has 7g of online storage for each account which you can access from any computer you sign in on

Need...no. But I find Gmail to be a pain (and you have to be online), and miss my Outlook Express, which MS has abandoned. I prefer a program on my PC to collect the emails.

Thanks for the input.

Go with windows live mail. It is web based, but also resides on your hard drive so you can work off line, save sent and received emails, integrates with win 7, etc. I liked OE too, Microsoft sux in a lot of ways.

I run thunderbird too, just in case.

I just found out something else that's cool about windows live mail with win 7.

My last computer crashed and I was able to have some info pulled from the hard drive.

All of my sent and saved emails from outlook express were saved as dbx files, which can't just be opened. Found out today that I could copy those files into my documents, open windows live mail, import them and they were restored to their original format. I don't know if that works with mozilla.

I sincerely wish someone would rewrite netscape 7.2's email program, I still use it and have to have a winxp computer since I read 130+ emails and sort through 4 email accounts a day, there is nothing like the window panes that program uses and if anyone knows of a program that will work on win7 I would like to know about it,

Sincerely

Opera's not a bad browser [no CR4 editor bar though]

it is easier to configure than firefox

I forgot that there is a mail client

I actually run 3 different mail accounts through the gmail online client. A few filters & some folders. the ability to turn off the conversation view pleases many traditionalists. I suppose there is something to be said for being able to work offline [not that I ever do :D]

Gmail is good, you can recieve email using any POP email client (outlook etc.) and have gmail forward it to you're email. You don't need to open browser to get your email. (see settings on Gmail page) They also have great help to set up your pop email.

In gmail, is there some way to insert a pic into the text? Not as an attachment, but in the body of the msg?

Garthh, thanks so much. The tutorial did the trick. Gmail may be all I need for now. I'll continue to explore it, and the email programs that others have mentioned.

There are lots of cool things hiding in gmail

the help files, usually contain lots of [probably too much] good info

I see references to working offline which was one of your other requirements, I never tried it myself...
