Jeep Wiring Question

12/16/2010 8:24 AM

Help! I have become so frustrated because I am one wire away from getting my '91 Jeep Wrangler running again but can not get a clear answer to my question.

Background- A few months back, my PDC (Power Disrtibution Center) suddenly caught fire while I was driving the Jeep. This happened 10 minutes after I had to have the battery jumped off because I suppose I had left my lights on while at work. Cause of fire still unknown. I was able to find and purchase a used, yet in very good condition, PDC and associated wiring harness. It was very easy to replace because everything could be disconnected and reconnected via connectors.

Now that everything has been reconnected, I am missing the one smaller wire that attaches to the starter. I do have the one that runs from the positive side of the battery connected though. I also know which lug the small wire is supposed to originate from on the starter. What I don't know is where it is supposed to connect to from there. I know that it is ultimately supposed to go to the ignition but not electrically inclined to trace that out. So here is my question:

Is anyone familiar enough with the '91 Jeep Wrangler (4cyl,manual 5 sp) to instruct me as to where specifically I need to connect the small wire wich runs from the starter? Ideally the answer would go something like this: "Use a 10 ga wire and connect it to the 'purple wire with a red stripe' coming off the "blank" relay at the PDC." (Or something to that affect.) Can anyone help? BTW, pictures would really help! Not schematics.

Thanks,

D.

I cannot answer your specific question but I did a quick google search and found many Jeep and Wrangler sites and forums in which you can probably find the answer or, at least be able to ask other owners.

There are also Chiltons and other repair manuals and sites from which you can download wiring diagrams for your specific model.

Good Luck.

Your going to need the proper schematics depicting the terminals. On the shematics is the wire colors clearly marked. Should not be a problem to trace the colors out as you have with "pictures". Try "All Data", Chiltons or go to the dealer and ask the parts guys to make you a photo copy of wiring.

In all instanced involving this wire you describe it ran direct to the ignition switch.

i would think it is in with the harness that go,s threw the firewall into the column.if you cant find it just install a push button switch on the front of the dash.it is not like it is a new Lexus. on the12volt.com they show you a way to use the cigarette lighter in the dash for theft reasons.

The small terminal (terminal 50)14 gauge wire (originally green with a white tracer) goes to the starter relay (terminal 4) in the power distribution center and also is spliced to an 18 gauge (green wire with green tracer) that goes to the electronic control unit (ECU)(terminal b) under the bulkhead connector in the engine compartment. I have a schematic available if you should change your way of thinking.

Excellent response! That is exactly what I was looking for. And yes, I would very much like to take a look at the schematic you have. What do you need from me to send it?

Thanks a lot!

I sent the schematic via email. Let me know if you don't get it and I'll figure something out!
