Electrical Engineer

12/28/2010 2:38 PM

I am planning to use 27/59 (GE IAV53K) relay for main transformer protection during backfeed operation when main generator links are removed. The Transformer is Delta-Y Grd. The relay will be connected thru CTs on Delta (Low Voltage) side. The Cts are Grd Y-Grd Y

Can you explain, what happens to voltages and currents on Delta side when one of the Y side (345kV) lines faults to ground. How this one single phase relay could provide indication of over volatge as well as under voltage conditions?

Thanks.

CR4 Admin has been busy on this thread.

"...and would otherwise be taken out of context." Hmmm. This being the case, it is a wonder Admin lets me say anything at all.

Due to fault in one phase voltage in other phases will be changed which will be sensed by the 59 relay.

Surely you mean connecting relay to VT/PT (Voltage/Potential Transformers), not CT (current transformers)!! By convention, the high voltage side of a transformer is written first e.g. 11/0.4 kV, writing Y grd - delta would have been better. If you had put IAV53K into a Google search you would have got to http://www.gedigitalenergy.com/products/manuals/iav/geh1814.pdf, which is the manual for the relay, which will show how it does under and over voltage in one box.
