Effect of Coal Quality to CFB Boiler

12/29/2010 11:27 PM

Hi everybody.

I have a power plant in VietNam. The power plant has 01 CFB Boiler which using anthracite coal( as combustion fuel. However, anthracite coal cannot supply enough for operating Plant because source of anthracite coal is very rare. So, we tend to change anthracite coal to bituminous coal or lignite coal as combustion fuel.

I don't have any reference engineering documents and practical foundation to evaluate Effect of coal quality to CFB Boiler life.

Do you have any ideas on this matter????

Post this question in the mechanical engineering section. These can be answered well by the mechanical engineer (or maybe in the chemical engineering section).

Bituminous coal has much higher volatile matter and often higher sulfur.

Heat produced is similar range.

The higher sulfur and volatile matter will play hell with your emissions control system if you have one.

We used Bituminous coal in our coke blends.

In india many FBC and CFBC boilers are designed and working with Bituminous, sub bituminous coal and lignite. So there is no problem on that account. Some adjustments of operating parameters may be required.

Hi kendo qn,

The approach recommended is to contact the maker of the boiler in the first place as their knowledge of setting up the plant is essential.

Broadly and has been mentioned there is no reason for not including or changing to the bituminous fuel; however bed conditions will change and therefore the management to avoid problems is a prerequisite of the change.

If you look at the Foster Wheeler web site or any CFB one you will quickly appreciate some of the subtle issues surrounding the safe and efficient way of coping with fuel changes and the effect on the overall combustion regime within the boiler.

Don't try short cuts as the potential risks to the longevity of the boiler are significant.

Good luck,

Massey.

Add a Paul Pantone device to your fuel feed of any carbon fuel.

Fabricate it your self, use an electric or engine driven turbine to pull a partial vacuum on the appropriate sized fuel processor. Pantones equipment is well recognized in Europe and on the Internet, good luck I wish I were there to help you.

Hello Kendo,

The major difference between an Anthracite and Bituminous coal firing is volatile matter versus ash content. The one requires more space in the burner box, the other more Ash handling capacity.

ALL types of firing; Are a balance of.... Time, Temperature, and Turbulence (in order to maintain a stable ignition).

As others in this thread have mentioned, operating parameters are going to be effected, but the Boiler life will not be impacted.
