Communication Over Industrial Network

12/30/2010 4:46 PM

We have a scada system with a fiber optic ring network and we need to connect some subsystems like PABX, CCTV, and other faraway sites. What is best to connect all of those with multiplexer or industrial switches with? Many engineers believe that multiplexers became an old technology.

My opinion is that you should use intelligent industrial switches such as routers. These have their own IP addresses and a central PC running the supplied software can be used to administer the network. Using this method is easy for fault-finding and can reduce downtime drastically when you have a network problem.

You could use the scada engineering PC as the network administrator PC.

Most routers are what many years ago were called multiplexers, though of course they are more sofisticated, so a good quality router should work

TRM has it! This is how I install my networks using PLC's. You could also create VPN's to separate buildings or process rooms to further organize your network for troubleshooting.
