X-ray and Similar High Frequency Equipments - Please Have an Example

12/31/2010 7:53 AM

Dear Friends, With the repealed Indian Electricity Rules, 1956 and the replaced regulations, CEA (Measures relating to Safety and Electricity Supply) Regulations, 2010 ; the rule-73 or regulation-54 explains the guidelines for the installation for X-ray or the similar high frequency installations. I need to get an example for the item under the phrase - similar high frequency equipment. Can Magnetic Resonant Imaging (MRI) equipments come under this category? No doubt that MRI is having not having any x-ray production, instead it is working under the principle of magnetic resonance.

Not sure what is meant by "high frequency" in this context, but for "similar" equipment to x-ray generators, consider linear accelerators.

I suspect that MRI equipment will not come under this heading because the entire frequency spectrum of the radio frequencies used to measure and detect this resonance are less than the frequencies of visible light. But I am not an authority on this CEA standard. If the standards include high radio frequencies as a radiation hazard (with enough power they can be) then I would expect that they either exempt visible light or have a combined frequency and power level to prevent the silly inclusion of a quartz halogen lamp to this safety standard.

I suspect that the phrase "similar high frequency equipment" is nothing more than a catch all phrase for future designs that may not exist yet. So X-Ray tubes that produce X-rays by brehmsstrahlung radiation and particle accelerators that produce X-rays and other frequencies by synchrotron radiation will be covered by this standard. There are now some small table top synchrotron sources today that have power and other limitations.

So, we could conclude that 'similar' means X-ray like. So, the equipments which use x-rays for their functioning could be included in the category. eg.: CT Scanner, Mammography, etc. (but not MRI Scanner)
