To Determine Oil Change by Specific Gravity?

01/03/2011 1:24 AM

In a equipment (e.g. Gear Box), could the oil change be reflected by checking the specific gravity of that oil. I wish to design a system in my plant, through which if the specific gravity of the oil is above the said parameter, we have to change the oil. Cld the same be done????

NO!

Oil samples sent to a lab is the best possible way to insure proper oil use and gear box life are achieved. Talk to your lubrication supplier and they will help set up a program with you. Or you can contact many of the oil labs listed under Thomas Register who do oil analysis.

Maybe. But it's probably better to do as fixitorelse suggests.

I don't think this is a good idea or an accurate way to check oil quality of a gear box.

Isn't there any documentation available from the gear box manufacturer regarding oil change interval (perhaps based on run hours and age) that you could use instead?
