HT Installation Safety

01/05/2011 4:19 AM

How safe is testing the accuracy of the meter in a HT installation? The meter is in a Metering Cubicle and that's where the Ammeter,Voltmeter, 5A CT's and 110VT's are connected.

Is there extra pre-cautions that should be adhered to?

Under no circumstances should the CT's be open circuited unless the metered feeder is isolated.

Hello dear,

Its too dangerous and harmful to do so. You should be careful about these kinds of jobs and please do it after switching off the circuit. U may calibrate meters from a specialist for accuracy.

Now its up to you how you care yourself such practices should be done by experts there is a possibility of insulation damage too.

Not safe for an amateur! You are going to be very near to the HT points: The VT's and CT's are on the HT Cables or Bars!

The Meter is connected to these CT's and VT's, and should be away from the HT lines (reasonably with in the cubicle).

All you need to calibrate is the meter (usually). For this you need to compare its reading with a calibrated instrument (another meter) that needs to be wired to either the same CTs VTs or different ones. To do the connections, you need to Isolate the Supply from the HT side before all this is done.

Short the metering core and disconnect the meters form the CT secondaries and you can test the accuracy with kits like phantom loading kit or any calibrated equipments.Make sure not to open the CT secondaries when it is live.

For VT remove the fuse and disconnect the meters and continue with the testing. Make sure a qualified engineer carryout this to avoid accidents. Bcoz, CT is the most dangerous equipment in electrical systems. It is danger for itself as well as you with its lethal voltage in secondaries when it is open.
