Global warming!

03/27/2007 6:55 AM

I would like to start a discussion on this phenomonen, ie. is man responsable for the rise in temperatures on this planet, or is it because of increased solar activity? My reasons for this discussion is that I am totally fed up of being fed a one sided story by our polititians that human activity is to blame! I am a geologist and I know for certain that the world has undergone these global warming and freezing stages before humans exsited. Spencer.

We have had this discusion before and you are right it is all down to can make the most money from the situation. Politicians love to try to scare us so they can control us. It is all about who wealds the power. The whole thing goes back to the eighties when M Thatcher the then Prime Minister was looking to scape goat the unions and oil barons. She was fed some research by an interested party and well the rest as they say is history. Now big buisness has clocked that they can make billions out of our ignorance. So there it is in a nut shell corruption in high place and comercial greed.

Spencer,

Back in the eighties there were reports that we were heading into the next "Ice Age". For the last 10 years it has been "Global Warming". These days they are taking a bet each way and just saying "Climate Change". I agree that only one side of the story is being told. I think that the media are as much to blame as politicians.

One of my thermodynamics text books said that the most important greenhouse gas was water vapour. It makes you wonder...

Your right about water vapour being important it does two things it provides a blanket and a mirror. The type and nature of the cloud makes it either good or bad. In the day time it reflects more than it insulates at night the reverse happens. Aircraft con trails are hotly debated as to how much the contribute to either side of the equation. Because of where they are produced it is important to be able to know what is going on. I personally as you must have read am totally sceptical on the global warming front. Too many depend on this issue remaining high on the agenda for the very existence. So much political steam has been produced that to say oops we messed up is now impossible they would lose too much face. Like all bad things it all comes back to a misguided individual being given more publicity than was ever going to be good for them. They are all crack pots with nothing better to do than to stir the pot and stand back to admire their handy work.Trouble is the are too many sheep in this world.

Hi BrainWave. As a geologist I have studied the Earths atmosphere and fluctuating temperatue through the last 500 million years. A thousand years ago we were under the thumb of the Roman Empire. The Romans here in the UK had built a wall from east to west in the north of England, cutting us off from Scotland. To supply the Garrison on this wall with wine they planted grape vines, with great success. The reason for this success was that the temperature was much higher in those days in the UK. Neither the Romans or the local Brits had any form of motorised transport and the industrial revolution was not to come for another 350years. Then in the mid 1600s we in Europe were up in the middle of a mini Ice-age, all the major rivers in Europe froze over every winter for many years. So if global warming is apon us it has nothing at all to do with mans activity. It is something the politicians and the green lobby has dreamt up to extract more money out of us tax payers. Another reason is that if we all panic about global warming then it takes our mind off what our politicians are doing to everybody else, ie. the war in the middle east, oil and gas prices and anything else they don't want us to know. Spencer.

Hi BrainWave. Thankyou for the compliment. Yes you are right, it is water vapour in the atmosphere that is one of the things that is causing global warming. I remember one day having to explain to a friend that just because it is winter the warmth we were feeling was because of the heavy cloud cover trapping the earths heat in the lower atmosphere. But of course it is much more complicated than that, as one of the worst gasses for the cause of global warming is methane. In the UK alone the herds of cattle are giving off vast amounts, in fact it has been calculated that the amount of methane produced by cattle in the UK is about 200,000 cubic meters per year, a vast amount. Then there is dust, microscopic particals, a lot of it is measured in nano-meters. Spencer.
