There are battery-pack transmitters that can accept a mic plug and communicate wirelessly to a receiver at your mixing board, but the cost of those systems is prohibitive compared to the relatively inexpensive wireless-handheld microphone systems available for purchase.

The previous post has a good start for you.

I would just add that building a durable unit yourself, that is compact and convenient to wear (clipped to a belt?) just so you can re-use your existing microphone, while avoiding interference and obtaining a clean, quality signal, is not a typical do-it-yourself project that is likely to end in success.

To obtain quality circuitry and packaging alone will cost you much more than today's simple and cheap DJ or even low-end stage wireless units.

For instance, if you are reluctant to purchase from an auction site like eBay and prefer a retailer who can ship worldwide, here's a simple VHF (170-216MHz) system for US$29.00

Once you have decided to get a wireless handheld, it will be powered by a typical 9V battery. I highly recommend ordering a rechargeable NiMH 9V battery and charger at the same time. The largest cost of your wireless system otherwise will be the money you waste every day buying alkaline 9V batteries, unless you purchase a rechargeable right away. We have had good experience in our church with the relatively inexpensive 10-battery with monitoring system, from "Powerizer" which is an off-brand (not one of the major companies like Duracell or Energizer). I checked the site we used, and they have a small 2-battery charger with 9V cells (they actually register 8.4V) here:

2x9V NiMH batteries with charger

Good luck! Have Fun!
