Record Source Monitoring Via USB

01/09/2011 6:09 PM

THEN—

I had a nice, fold-up, audio-in/-out, HP stereo headset that I sometimes used for monitoring purpose when recording from an earphone/line-out (1out on dwg) source, via patch, to the mike-in port (2in) on the desktop/laptop PC. I would monitor the source-output/record-input by means of an interfaced wye adapter connected between the source (ref 1out) and the headset's earphone-port plug (3in). (Headset mike connection status ... immaterial.)

That worked fine but the HP headset, besides having unreinforced wires inconsistent with a $30+ price, also had a human-factors (design) flaw leading to its eventual loss of usability.

Because that HP headset had been withdrawn—evidently I was not the only purchaser to cry "foul"—the merchant traded for an equivalent (or, materials wise, superior) Logitech headset; however, it provides for plug-in via USB interface (4i/5o)—as opposed to mike-in-&-phones-out, discrete hardware connections—to the computer.

NOW—

In order to (attempt to) record from the audio source while monitoring with the new headset, I patched source's output (ref 1out) to the PC's mike input (ref 2in), while the headset (in particular, ostensibly, its earphones) were/was interfaced with (ref 4?/5out) USB. I then, after some audio set-up tinkering in (Windows) Control Panel, arrived at an "experimental," (ref 1out)-to-(ref 2in)intake and (ref 4?/5out) USB output-to-headset audio input (to phones only?) software-drive configuration. (By the weigh, the source is monaural, so in the THEN setup monitored sound played in only one earphone.)

My problem with the NOW setup is that, even though driver set up is for audio signal intake at mike jack, and monitoring via USB (presumably earphone-routed-only?) audio output, for some reason the combined set-up does not seem to work.

Please advise how, if possible, the software set up might be done in order to monitor "mike" input to PC "record" via PC USB audio output. Or, if not do-able, recommend adapter type and source by which a USB headset can, if both possible and feasible, be adapted to discrete, stereo phones & mike inputs/output plug receptacles.

Thank you.

I'm having a little trouble following what it is you're trying to do, but this may help

IMic

you didn't say what program you are using to capture the sound or which windows you are running, which might help coming up with a solution.

I suppose you have tried to mute everything & turn them on one at a time

The replacement headset you got was not "equivalent or better", it's a completely different animal! Your old setup was an analog headset, and you were able to "monitor" what was being input to your recording source. The USB headset you have is basically a sound-card in itself, you will not be able to do "live" monitoring of an analog audio source as you are trying to do. In my opinion, you need to get another analog headset to do what you are trying to do. I think even if you do get your setup to work, the sound you hear is going to be delayed from the source, and it won't be a true representation of the analog audio you are trying to monitor.

Hope that helps,

Tom D.

I believe, and I have been known to be wrong, that you need a mixer. Something like:

Mixer

The link above is just for illustrative purposes. I have no interest in the company and/or website, did about 12 seconds of research to find it, and have no clue if it's cheap or too expensive, only that a mixer gives you the ability to monitor the input like you used to.

Or, he can go get another $5 pair of analog headphones, and use the "Y" that he already has
