Electrical Generator Textbook

01/10/2011 6:11 AM

Can anyone recommend a text book which explains how electrical salient pole generators work and their various paramaters (IN SIMPLE ENGLISH TERMS)? paramaters such as: armature reaction synchronous reactances (direct axis, quadrature axis etc.) I'm currently reading ALSTOM - Guide to network protection and automation, but the theory is way too high level. Can anyone recommend a textbook which explains these things in plane english?

I can't imagine that one textbook would cover network protection, automation, and motors/generators. I often wonder why someone would ask for something so specific...

This forum is great for asking specific questions about specific topics like, "What kinds of protection does a network need?" (from what??? Hackers?, lightning?, server disconnects?,,,,)

As for exposure to technical information, are you near a library? Have you tried wikipedia?

I am not interested in how to set up protection paramaters, I am purely interested in the internal workings of a generator and the various paramaters used when specifying generators.. Surely there are textbooks which explain this

You might enjoy looking around at this link

http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_2/index.html and search on the term generator.

The internal workings of a motor are the same as a generator. It is only a matter of which direction the power is flowing as to which is which.

Another way to think of a motor/generator is to think of a transformer with a primary and short circuited secondary that can rotate relative to each other instead of burning up due to the short.

Can you be more specific as to the information you seek?
