USB to Ethernet On a Nintendo Wii

01/10/2011 8:09 AM

Our family procured a Wii this Xmas season. Lost of fun. I would like to connect it to the network hub I have in the room, but, being the cheap bastard that I am, I would like to make a USB to Ethernet connector myself, instead of buying on for $20 or so. I did a quick check on the internet qnd found many placed to buy one but did not find any pinouts. Do any of you bright people out there in CR4 land have a schematic for this? Thanks in advance.

Buy one!

This is NOT just a simple connector. Even if you had a schematic, the parts would cost you at least that much. Then you will have to solder many nearly microscopic surface mount parts to a tiny circuit board and you may also have to program a small microprocessor or FPGA. This is far beyond all but the most advanced home electronics hobbyists.

The Wii has WiFi built in, that is the simplest way to connect if you already have wireless in your home.

Quantity discounts on electronic components and PCBs are so large that the parts probably will cost more than the finished article. The chips involved would all be high density surface mount that are tricky to solder by hand even with a microscope (approximately 0.3mm wide pins with 0.3mm spacing). Some devices cannot be hand soldered because all the contacts are underneath.
