Electronic Project Idea

01/10/2011 10:17 PM

As i'm a undergraduate student who is in the final year of the B.Eng Electronic Engineering degree program conducted by the Sheffield Hallam UK for my final year individual project i am expected to choose a desired field related to electronics. As my major concerns are on microcontroller, wireless sensor areas it will be very helpful if you can provide me with a interesting project idea.

i am expected to choose a desired field related to electronics.

I cannot really help you with that.

As my major concerns are on microcontroller, wireless sensor areas it will be very helpful if you can provide me with a interesting project idea.

How about a wireless sensor that harvests energy from its surroundings to power the sensor (vibration, heat, solar, utilising measured process flow to drive a small generator, etc) and transmits the data wirelessly. These sensor devices (be they entirely self-powered or utilising a battery/super-capacitor storage with energy harvesting to extend sensor runtime) are becoming more common in the industry and would make an interesting project covering a number of different applicable engineering fields.

Hi! Tnx very much for this interesting idea. Can you please explain how this can be applied in industry(some examples maybe). Is it possible to implement this in small scale. For example how to make use of vibrations to harvest energy, the technology behind the process? Please point me to some references as i am really new to the area you suggested. Tnx again

The developing technological field is called "energy harvesting", a quick internet search will provide you with a wealth of knowledge.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_harvesting

http://www.energyharvesting.net/

And some example commercial products using energy harvesting techniques

http://www.enocean.com/

Small scale implementation is certainly possible (right down to the microscopic scale imbedded on a microchip), in fact the technology and concepts are designed for small scale and small devices with low current draw due to the fact that you can only get a small amount of energy out of say a vibration, background electromagnetic field, temperature change, etc.

Also try an internet search of "energy harvesting sensor" for more examples

Thank you very much...

I was just going through these stuff in the internet. At this level it seems to suit well with my requirement. I'm sure with further digging, i could get a good picture of this and present this idea to my supervisor to get his feedback. I hope that you will further assist me in the long journey ahead...

How about a device that will wirelessly sense the misuse of indefinite articles in your writing, and control the release of those documents with improper grammar. While you are at it, punctuation and capitalization might be in the mix as well.

Review of comments here at CR4 indicates such a device will have a high demand. Sad, this.

If you can understand what i said that's all it matters right? I think you can make your self useful in a general English forum.

"If you can understand what i said that's all it matters right?"

To the contrary nickjayr, that is not all that matters. Communication skill will prove to be one of your most powerful and useful tools in your engineering toolkit.

Understanding others, and making yourself clearly understood, is vital to producing desired results. It is possible, as an example, for you to continue on and become an Air Traffic Controller.

I really understand that. But what if i ask my question in my mother tongue which i'm really good at. Will you be able to answer my question? I really doubt it. So it will be useless for both you and me. English is some thing i'm still learning. For your information though i'm studying for a UK degree. I'm not a citizen there.

Fair enough.

Please forgive my assumption that English is your native tongue; your comment about attending school in the UK led me to the conclusion. With that being the case, you are doing well with the language of another culture. My general comments about communication skills are still valid, and it sounds like you are aware of the importance of clear communication, whatever the language.

There are many multi-lingual members and guests at CR4, and I envy their skill and ability. I speak and write a little German and Spanish, but (as you point out) other tongues are a complete mystery to me. Being conversant in several languages will be yet another powerful tool in your engineering toolkit.

I welcome you to CR4.

Tnx for being a gentleman...

Actually i have some apologies to make in my part also. I was trying to establish my point while having my own mistakes. This would have turned this discussion in to a long argument where neither of us wins. After reading your first comment i went through my post again & noticed some punctuation errors. May be because i was in a hurry to prepare it. Whatever it is, that reminded me to be more careful on what i publish to the public in what ever the language it is. I'm really thank full for that.

As i have seen, you are a senior member of this community who has contributed a lot to CR4; with respect i would like to give my opinion on your first comment. Which is, my reaction would have been different if you had presented your opinion in a different manner. The reason for my suggestion is in the very famous book called 'how to win friends and influence people' by dale carnegie which i refer these days.

Thanks for welcoming me to CR4 community. Project ideas are highly appreciated...
