47RE Converter issues

01/20/2011 3:59 PM

After rebuild on a 98 Dodge 5.9L diesel, the converter clutch is not holding. There are no codes. Are there any known issues with these converters?

No problem! Welcome to CR4. Let us know how you come out. We have a few crackerjack mechanics here.

Then again we have a few crackpot mechanics here too.

You may want to check and make sure you have not damaged any of the wiring that plug into the the left side of the transmission. did you rebuild the engine or the trans. How is the converter clutch not functioning properly.

I drove the truck before rebuilding the transmission and the lock up in 3rd and 4th gear was very strong. We have already checked all of the obvious. No problem with the converter lock up until after rebuild. When converter locks up engine will flare 300 to 800 rpm with light throttle pressure. I have been building transmissions for 20 years never to run into this problem. This is the 3rd one in two years with the same problem. I have installed Billet converters, Transgo shift kits...it seems like the converter is not getting enough lock up pressure. Line pressures are right on the money. We have changed gov. solenoids, sensors, TCC and 3/4 solenoids to no avail.

If you are this far into this tranny, why don't you try applying power to the lockup solenoid directly. Just pass the wire through the pan gasket as a test?

I've tried that too. I have applied the 12 volts to the solenoid and a manual ground. You can feel the converter locking up but will not hold. It seems that there is not enough hydraulic pressure.

Is it possible to test the pressure to TCC directly? If not can you test line pressure and watch it as lockup is applied? If the pressure is leaking at the TCC, the line pressure should also drop at that time. Is it possible to boost line pressure sufficiently to allow for the pressure drop-leak?

have watched the pressure when lock up is applied and the pressure remains to be about 95 to 105 psi. I don't know of a way to check the converter psi directly.

Short of pulling the converter and pressurizing with air, I am at a loss now. Any chance that the valve body to case gasket is wrong, blocking the passage to the converter? Hopefully smarter ones than I will join with some fresh thoughts.

If it has a stock converter then it could be a situation of the internal clutch seals failing in the converter. If you have power adders on the diesel then you could be over powering the transmission which he 47RE was actually a gas engine trans that was modified to use with the diesel. 98% of the time when you have lockup slippage or failure it is caused by a failed converter clutch section and the gas and diesel converters are completely different animals
