Torque required

Torque required to shear bolts

Case study, example:

A shaft, say Ø90 mm with a flange machined on the centre. The shaft is supported between two bearings on each end, machined down to Ø80 mm for the bearings. Distance between bearing centres is 250 mm. There are 10x Ø16 holes on a PCD of 200 mm on the flange. The shaft and the ring gear material are EN36 and case hardened to 60HRc. The ring gear is bolted onto the shaft with a flange. The shaft is connected to an engine. Assume a friction value of 0.8 (clean machined faces).

  1. What is the recommended torque for the 10x M16x1.5 (clean thread) bolts?
  2. What is the maximum torque required to shear the 10x M16 bolts grade 8.8?
  3. What is the maximum shear and bending stress in the shaft?
