what is the purpose of airlock on pneumatic cylinder with I/P positioner?

Well, the I/P converter is used simply to convert 4-20 mA to 3-15 psi.

Airlock relays/air chambers are used to provide fail-safe condition during the operation of the cylinder. these relays are used only for double acting cylinders, as in single acting cylinders the fail-safe is provided by spring return.
