To help clarify the situation (for me at least), are you looking to build a tiller powered by the bullock, are are you trying to build a small tiller powered by something to do about the same amount of tilling that you could do per day with a plow pulled by a bullock?

Sir,

I assume you are a smallholder farmer in India who is looking for a small traction unit to replace bullocks on your farm.

You may be aware that already world wide there are many brands of two wheel tractor (commonly called power tiller). Over 500,000 are made annually (mostly in China). However there is at least one Indian brand. Have a look at http://www.vsttillers.com/product/Power%20Tillers.

This is a picture of a Chinese Dong Feng 12HP two wheel tractor with rotavator (power tiller).

Is this what you want?

I have full details if you want.

So, you say the tiller is not successful. In what respect--it doesn't function as desired (and what is that problem specifically), or it is not a commercial success?

Ok, so you've built this tiller, and it is not a commercial success. Presumably, you've built more than one, and are having trouble selling them.

So, is your price higher than your competition? Do you have competition--are tillers of about this size being sold in India? How does your tiller differ from their's?

Do you have any idea how big the overall market is for tillers of this size? I guess I'd first consider who is it aimed at--you can best tell us--small farms below a certain size? Large home gardeners over a certain size? (Both in hectares (or acres).)

Do those people (small farmers / large home gardeners) make enough money to afford something like this? Can it help them make more money? (I would guess it can if they have more land than they can presently till. On the other hand, do they value their leisure (or have alternative money making opportunities such that time saved here can be used to make more money in some other way).

If the answers to some of these questions are yes, you have to find a way to convince those potential customers. Do you have a salesforce? Do you advertise? Do you have any dealers (or do some dealers of this type equipment carry your product)? Can you think of any marketing activities you can undertake? (Perhaps as silly sounding as going to nearby potential customers and letting them use your machine for a few hours?)

I've ignored your one technical question--you apparently either have a problem with the gearbox, or feel you could save some money if you could replace the existing gearboxes with a single gearbox and a differential? I guess you want one gearbox to drive both the tiller tines and the wheels? I would think that is possible, possibly by means of a gearbox with two output shafts, but someone else can probably comment better.

I would strongly advise all those who wish to design a machine such as described in this forum to set themselves up as a local agent for a Chinese built unit. They come in all shapes and sizes, and are very reasonable in price. From my experience in South Asia, they are also reasonably reliable, provided they are serviced properly.

Have a look through a Chinese export machinery internet site like Alibaba.

Re: Malkhandi Farm Machine(Power Tiller)

Malkhandi Fram Machine

We are pleased to introduce ourselves as one of the leading hand tractor manufacturing company in India. This machine is purely of Indian origin and we have no collaboration with any countries.

We have made Diesel operated small farming machines which is very useful for agriculture, gardening and horticultural purposes.

Given the right set of implements and attachments, this machine is capable of performing most of the field operations like ploughing, harrowing, cultivation, ridging furrowing, pumping water etc.

Its capability in particular for wetland paddy cultivation is unique, which no other machines or animal power can equal.

The specialty of this machine is that it works with the help of a plough and cultivator; it does not have any rotary blades which we usually get to see in hand tractor machines.

With the attachment of small trailer this machine can also be used for transportation.

One person can easily cultivate 5 bighas of land in almost half a day.

The cost of spare parts are cheap and available throughout India.
