Winter Storm In The Windy City

02/01/2011 10:13 PM

I'm proximately 50 miles do west of Chicago, who Chicagoan's would consider us country folk.

I live in a rural subdivide of about 30 homes. I own a Kubota BX24, 4' front loader and a 5' back blade.

1ST plow 4pm about 4" of snow did mine and my neighbors on either side of me, a proximate total 12000 sq-ft in 1.5 hour.

2nd plow 7pm… another 4" BRING IT ON!

Hunker down! The wind is ferocious.

I hear Rt 20 west of Marengo towards Belvidere is closed due to drifting. The state plows have always done a miserable job on that stretch, which drifts pretty badly being a due east-west thoroughfare.

The shelves in the grocery store were emptying rapidly at 4:30PM this afternoon.

The neighbor works at a bank in Huntley, all employees except a manager were sent home early this afternoon.

dk - remember to drink heavily, you don't want to suffer hypothermia

I am about 80 mile s/w of Chicago in a very rural area.

Between driving home from Chicago last night, trying to clear snow last night and the conditions now, all I can say is I am quite impressed!

I went out around 8PM last night and attempted to plow and gave up. At this time we had about a foot on the ground, 3 foot drifts here and there and 35 to 40 knot winds.

I went back out at 4AM this morning and the stillness in the air was eerie. No wind at all. I was able to get everything plowed.

The wind picked back up around 6AM (about 30 knots) and you really can't tell that anything was plowed.

Right now we are experiencing white out conditions. Here are some pics taken from my tool shed (no - the window is not dirty - that is how much snow is blowing):

The drift on either side of the tree near the house is 39 inches.

Road in front of the house

Wife's car

Not much to do at this point but drink. I'll try to make the best of it

Miller in Nature's fridge? ahhh, the essentials!!!

thanks so much for the pics....reminds me way too much of the blizzard that occurred here a few days after Christmas 2010. As nasty as they can get! ACCKKKKK!!!!

BTW, I love the tractor! SEXY!!!!! I haz to get me one of them!!! Actually, I'm in the process of fabricating the steel parts of the front end bucket for my spare JD garden tractor conversion. It'll be nice to see how it works this Spring....then I'm off to build the rear end excavator!

Stay warm! I'm sure the brews will do that just fine. You know, Blackberry Brandy is better anti-freeze, and acts much quicker too! LOL

On our rural secondary road, the first municipal 'plow' just went by at 5:40PM, not a truck with a plow by a 70HP construction tractor with a front loader bucket (probably removed the back hoe off for the storm). Wind has died down since 3:30 pm.

Township is responsible for roads. I wonder if they're busy plowing or enjoying their winter supplies.

ooweee, guys, I hear ya. Impressive photos. You got a lot more snow than we did here in NE Pennsylvania, but right now we're also encased in ice, which as you might know, is also good for drinks. My view of the back 40:
